No 4. Term 1 Week 7, 14th March 2025
Deputy News
Dear Families,
Mr Micallef was away this week so it's Mr Butler and Mrs Gage here to say 'hello' in this newsletter.
This coming week is Catholic Education Week. Catholic Education Week is a special time to celebrate what makes Catholic schools unique. It’s about recognising how these schools help children grow not just academically but also in their faith and values. It’s a chance to reflect on how learning about kindness, compassion, and service to others is an important part of a Catholic education. The week also honours the hard work of teachers, families, and communities who support students in becoming caring and thoughtful individuals who live out their faith in everyday life. On Friday, Mrs Hettiarachchi and some of the Grade Six Student Leaders will be travelling to the Cathedral and will participate in the Catholic Education Week Mass and festivities. We wish them well representing St Kevin's!
NAPLAN has been happening this week and will continue next week. The students in Year 3 and Year 5 have been settled and calm as they undertake these assessments that provide a snapshot of their learning.
On Friday, it was great to see so many parents at the Parent Engagement Morning Tea. We discussed ways to enhance parent engagement, participation and voice and have organised some structure for the P&F and fundraising. Stay tuned because you will also be invited to engage in our school community by supporting in a wide variety of ways ranging from helping with P&F through to volunteering for classrooms and excursions.
This week, we have two special days to show COLOUR! On Monday, 17th March students can wear green or a 'splash of green' for St Patrick's Day. On Friday, 21st March, students are welcome to wear orange or a 'splash of orange' to celebrate Harmony Day. There is no need to buy anything; please use whatever you have!
Next week the School Leaders are selling ANZAC BADGES from $2. All proceeds go to the Cranbourne RSL.
We have had a great week at our wonderful school, and we look forward to another busy yet exciting week ahead.
Yours in faith,
Andrew Butler and Rebecca Gage

Education in Faith
Reflecting on this week's Gospel
On the second Sunday of Lent, we move from Jesus' retreat to the desert and temptation by the devil to the glory shown in Jesus' Transfiguration.
In this week's gospel according to Luke, the voice from heaven speaks to the disciples, saying, “Listen to him.” The Transfiguration was a focused moment for the disciples when they heard God speaking to them and experienced Jesus in glory. They most certainly left this focused moment with a new appreciation for the importance of Jesus' words, even if they did not yet understand everything that he had taught them. During Lent, we are invited to consider our attentiveness to Jesus and to one another. In the pace and noise that often characterises family life, how well do we listen to one another? What opportunities do we have for quiet prayer?
Gather as a family and read aloud today's gospel, Luke 9:28-36. Consider whether the noise and pace of your family life allows family members opportunities for quiet prayer. During Lent, it may be appropriate for your family to choose a time for quiet in the household by turning off televisions and other electronic appliances. Consider whether your family would like to establish such a time during this Season of Lent and suggest that it might allow you the opportunity to listen more attentively to God’s voice and one another. Spend a few such moments as a family, asking God to help you listen well to one another and to Jesus.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, radiant with divine glory, we stand in awe of your Transfiguration. We thank you Father, for revealing the glory of Your Kingdom through Your beloved Son, Jesus.
Lord, in the midst of our earthly struggles and uncertainties, grant us the grace to see Your glory. When darkness threatens to overwhelm us, let the light of Your Transfiguration shine brightly in our hearts. Help us to listen to Your voice, to follow Your teachings, and to trust in Your promises. Strengthen our faith, that we may face the trials of life with courage and hope, knowing that You are with us.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Creating a Prayer Space for Grades 1 & 2
On Tuesday, the 1/2 Team came together to hear the Gospel Prayer in their new Prayer Space in the Junior Building. It has been created to be a space for teachers, students and their families to reflect and pray. We talked to the junior students about how they need to be quiet and respectful in this space by walking and being very careful when moving around. It was lovely today for all the teachers, students and LSOs to come together to listen to the Gospel prayer together.
Father Fabian was the first to visit our new prayer space. He came to talk to the junior students about being a part of God’s family. Father said that when we are baptised, we are welcomed into God’s family. He explained that as the priest of St Kevin’s Parish, he has a very important job to do which is to help people in the Hampton Park community to grow closer to Jesus. The junior students enjoyed listening to Father Fabian and had lots of questions for him too. We would like to thank Father Fabian for visiting the 1/2 students and look forward to him coming again.

Learning & Teaching
Making a mark in Junior Art!
This term, the Junior school students have been introduced to the first element of art, Line! Meeting their classroom mascot, Larry the Line, the students have begun exploring simple and complex lines.
Throughout the term, the junior’s will be introduced to artists who use lines to create engaging and interesting artworks, including Paul Klee and Charles McGee. Through exploration of art materials, the students will develop skills of creative and flexible thinking, alongside self-expression and cause and effect.
Check out the Grade 2s outstanding cube sculptures, inspired by the artist Charles McGee. Using varying line thickness, patterns and styles, each side of their sculpture has a different and creative artwork!
