Principal's News

Welcome to our final newsletter for term 1. What an incredible start to the year it has been and how fortunate are we to be able to celebrate an entire term (we can ignore the short circuit breaker lockdown I think) of being at school together with our community.
In particular, I would like to congratulate our Preps and their families for completing a successful transition to school. Everyone has settled in well to the daily routines of the classroom and school life.
Looking ahead into the last week of term, we enter the most holy of weeks in the church calendar. As we prepare for the rising of our Lord on Easter Sunday, Holy Week concludes the forty days of Lent where we prepared for our Lord’s coming with almsgiving, fasting, and prayer. We enter the Triduum, three special days in preparation for Easter. Holy Thursday, the day of the Last Supper between Jesus' and His disciples. Good Friday, the day of our Lord’s crucifixion and death and Holy Saturday which focuses on the transition of Jesus’ death and his Resurrection. During these three days before Easter, as Catholics, we have the opportunity to experience our Lord’s suffering. Then, Easter Sunday celebrates the Resurrection of our Lord and holds unto our Christian belief that our Lord conquered sin and through his Resurrection, we experience redemption.
Our students begin their Easter break at 2:30pm on Holy Thursday. Take the time to pause, reflect, and experience the importance of the Triduum and Easter in your lives. We wish you the blessings of Our Risen Lord!
Jason Micallef,
Principal
Don't forget!
- Term 1 concludes on Thursday April 1 at 2:30pm
- Term 2 commences on Monday April 19
First Reconciliation
Congratulations to our students who last week, celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. It was clear in the way they approached the sacrament that they were truly blessed with a new and profound experience of the forgiveness and mercy of our loving God.

Good luck Mrs Brobyn

At the end of this term, Mrs Brobyn will be taking some time away from school to be a mum. We will certainly miss her but are also very excited for her and her husband Chris as they prepare to welcome a new addition to their family.
All going well, Mrs Brobyn will return to school in term 4. In the meantime, we are grateful to Mrs Bonato who will be teachng 3/4BB full time until the end of Term 3. As you know, Mrs Bonato already teaches 3/4BB two days a week.
Miss Rowlands will be our Acting Religious Education Leader, ensuring our Sacramental program continues as planned.
The Addams Family Musical

This year, St. Kevin's have been invited to be a part of the St. John's Regional College biennial musical, The Addams Family. This is an exciting opportunity for some of our students to experience being an integral part of a high quality theatrical production.
With only 13 places available for our students to fill, auditions were hotly contested. Congratulations to the following students who were selected (after numerous auditions) to be part of St. John's Musical for 2021.
Phillip 5/6 SP, Bella 5/6 DA, Micaela 5/6 DA, Amelia 5/6 DA, Madison 5/6 BU, Nadine 5/6 BU, Shanelle 5/6 BU, Aria 5/6 BU, Roxana 5/6 LN, Jordan 5/6 BU, Chloe 5/6 LN, Achilles 5/6 MB, Alannah 5/6 ME.
Enrolments for 2022

Children born between January 2016 and 30 April 2017 are eligible to start school next year. If you have a child you would like to enrol to start school next year, enrolments are now open.
If you are intending on enrolling your child to start school at St. Kevin's next year, please complete the Operoo form that was sent to all families as soon as possible, so that we can send your enrolment pack.
Covid-safe Reminders
As the months lead us into winter, it is likely we will see more children developing cold or flu-like symptoms. Given the need to remain vigilant during the current pandemic, parents are reminded that children must not attend school if they have any symptoms such as; runny nose, cough or fever. In such cases, children should have a Covid test and remain at home until they have received the test results and are symptom free.
Hot Cross Bun Drive

What a success our first Hot Cross Bun fundraiser was! With over 210 orders collated and packed, it couldn’t have been done without the amazing support of our generous parent volunteers: Nancy, Lucy, Kiran, Geraldine and Wahazit. Thank you once again for helping our school raise over $800 towards the redevelopment of one of our playgrounds.

Canteen News
Bellbrook Catering would like to wish our St. Kevin's comunity a safe and fun Easter Break. A reminder that the last canteen day for term 1 is Thursday 1st April and the first canteen day for term 2 is Thursday 22nd April.

Leadership Reception
Last Thursday, on the 18th of March the House Leaders went to Bunjil Place for the 2021 Student Leadership Reception. We had some special guests like Lucy Thomas who is the founder of PROJECT ROCKIT which is a movement created to stop bullying. We also had School Captains of Kambrya College talk to us about having meetings to discuss problems in their school and to encourage us to think of some things we could change in our school. The last special guest was a girl named Subhashini Singhal who was named the first Casey Local Hero of the Year in 2021 for her youth advising and achievements for the community.
Some advice that they gave us was “Doubt kills more dreams than failure” - Subhasini Singhal. Lucy Thomas - “Try to catch yourself when you’re not kind to yourself and flip the script.”
Some other advice people said to us was, “Cooperation, not competition,” and there were many more amazing pieces of advice. With this advice in mind, we will do what we can to improve our school. We enjoyed performances from Jstep Dance and Dhee Wickramasinghe.

St. Kevin's kids show off their bike skills

The following is an article written by Damian and Shawn from Year 6. This article is featured in the upcoming edition of the Star News. See the online version here.
"Our school, St. Kevin’s Primary School Hampton Park, organised a meeting place in front of the Hampton Park Library. We were told to arrive at 8.15am with our bikes, scooters and bike helmets.
There were multiple teachers there, so two could lead each group of students, one at the front, one at the back. There were five groups, the faster and older students first, and the slower and younger students going later.
Each group consisted of about 30 students and left at different times. The groups travelled safely across the roads, stopping at the traffic lights with the support of their teacher group leaders and other teachers positioned along the way.
The smaller groups meant we were able to stay together.
Many of the students from St Kevin’s Primary School were able to participate because of our yearly Bike Education Program.
In our school, Prep to Year 6 students participate in the Bike Ed program throughout the year. Each lesson, we start by completing a safety check of our bikes and helmets. We need to make sure that our helmets are fastened correctly and our bike is working.
We do laps around our school oval to warm up for our riding skills. Each lesson, the teachers who have been trained, organise drills for the students to practice and that teach us how to ride a bike safely. The school has bikes for students to learn on and they are very useful for our school community.
Sometimes, students get split into groups for different drills. We get a certain amount of time to do each drill before we move on to the next.
Students are provided with helmets, hairnets and bikes if they don’t bring their own to school. The program runs at different times throughout the whole year for Prep to Year 6. Each year level gets two hours of riding each week for 5 weeks during the program. St. Kevin’s has a variety of bike sizes available for its students.
Once we have completed our Bike Ed for the year, the next year we are ready and confident to participate in the ride from the Hampton Park Library to St. Kevin’s with the support of our teachers."
