No 21. Term 4 Week 9, 2nd December 2022
Principal News

Dear Families,
It's hard to believe but here we are in December! As busy as December is, I really do enjoy the month. Mainly because it is a time to celebrate the progress and achievements of all; our students and their families, our teachers, our learning support officers, our administration staff, our leaders and Fr. Des and Fr. Anil, and what we have done collectively to make the 2022 school year, one of success. This year we are grateful for being blessed with the opportunity to remain onsite for all our learning. It has enabled all of us to establish and deepen our relationships, giving us a stronger sense of belonging and connectedness. As a result of this, the students have been provided with many experiences and opportunities to extend their learning, especially with the addition of Camp, our inaugural School Performance, the celebration of the sacraments, masses across the school, social justice initiatives, school student leadership, and a swimming and water safety program, just to name a few. Currently, I am reading through the school reports, learning about each student and their progress this year. In a way, reading reports is a bit like reading a final chapter of a great book and leaves one with a feeling of satisfying closure.... and maybe the anticipation of an exciting sequel to follow. Our whole community, but especially our children are to be commended on a job well done.
As you know, last Sunday we began the season of Advent. Advent is the season of new beginnings and it beckons to us with images of transformation and hope. It is the season of the impossible becoming possible. It is the season of longing and light. Week by week, candles are lit on the Advent wreath signifying our longing for the light of Christ as the time of his birth draws near. Yet Advent heralds more than Christ’s birth. It paves our way toward celebrating Christ as God-with-us, God in human flesh. This is a profound mystery at the heart of our faith, and it is the cause of our joy at Christmas. Across the school at this time, the students experience prayer daily but also in Advent Liturgies where their focus has centred on each of the candles and their significance. These have been amazing opportunities to gather as a community in prayer and thank all the families who managed to join us for these important occasions.
We are very excited about the coming week as we welcome the return of Carols by Sunlight. This will be my first experience of these 'in-person' events since becoming principal of this great school, so I am very much looking forward to seeing our children sing with joy and love. We hope that families will come along and celebrate with us. All are welcome!
God bless and have a wonderful week ahead.

Students will be dismissed at 1:30pm.
Year 6 Graduation

The date for Year 6 Graduation Mass this year, is Tuesday 13th December at 7:00pm. The students will also be attending their Graduation excursion on Wednesday 14th December. A note detailing both events will be sent via Operoo soon.
Canteen reminder

Canteen is finishing up for 2022. Last days for canteen orders are Thursday December 8 and Friday December 9.
NO HAT, NO PLAY

A reminder to all families, that all students require a St. Kevin's hat to play outdoors. Even with the amount of cloud cover we have had this term, the sun has the potential to burn students. Please ensure your child has a school hat to play outdoors with. If students do not have a sunhat they will be required to sit under the shaded areas at break times to protect them from the sun. Thank you for your continued support of this.
Colour Fun-Run Success!
What a sensational event our Colour Fun Run was. There were nine boxes of prizes that were sorted out this week by Caryn, Rozanne and Natalie. A huge thank you for your efforts in getting this done so quickly. We also thank Shanika, Koreti and Nancy who had also offered to assist with this organisation. The prizes have now been distributed to the students to recognise their efforts in raising a profit of $11850.
Congratulations must go to our highest fundraising student, Mischa in 1/2DC who will receive a medal for her efforts in raising almost $1000!
Working Bee
A couple of weeks ago, we held our term 4 Working Bee. Weather conditions were just right for getting stuck into some of our more overgrown garden beds and tackling the abundance of weeds. Thanks to the long periods of wet weather, our poor gardens were certainly in need of attention.
We would like to express our gratitude to the Arun, Costa, Kottikalage, Silva and Solarski families who gave their time to help out.

5/6 Christmas Theatre Experience
On the 16th and 30th of November all of the grade 5/6 classes caught a train into the city to watch the theatre production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens. We have read and studied this novel in class, so it was very special that we could see this production, to make the story come alive!
We walked to Federation Square, and some classes were even lucky enough to see all of Federation Square decorated, ready for Christmas. After this, we walked to the Myer Christmas Windows on Bourke Street. These windows were so amusing and just unbelievably amazing. The theme this year is Disney, which all our students were super excited to see as their childhood memories come alive.
At the theatre, the staff and actors were very welcoming and they even brought out fruit mince pies and mandarins! The musical was just such a different experience with a great atmosphere, everyone is so grateful for this opportunity and will never forget it!

5/6 Gumbuya World, Water Safety
On the 24th of November, the grade 5/6s were fortunate enough to experience a Water Safety Excursion at Gumbuya World.
The 5/6 cohort learnt some of the following skills;
- what to do if you were thrown overboard on a sinking boat
- how to wear a life jacket
- the precaution signs at the beach and how to give CPR
After finishing our learning we had a delicious group lunch where hot food was provided. We then got to enjoy the waterpark and huge waterslides. These slides left so many people shocked and excited at the same time, especially the “Boomerango,” which had a 30 - 48 metre drop that left us screaming all the way to the end of the waterslide.
Everyone left Gumbuya World very grateful and delighted to have experienced this fun the teachers had planned for us.
